Moss thrives in damp, shady environments with acidic soil and if these conditions are prevalent, moss can easily outcompete grass and completely take over your lawn.

Whether moss appears attractive in a lawn, is a matter of personal preference.  However, for a traditional lawn aesthetic, most people would consider moss to be undesirable, as it can appear in large patches and look unkempt, if its not intentionally cultivated....

So love it or hate it, the presence of moss growing in a lawn often indicates underlying environmental conditions and can impact on the overall health of the lawn.  Patches of moss can indicate poor drainage, excessive shade cast by trees or a garden bench for example, or it could be that the soil is lacking in essential nutrients - or a combination!
